Will takes 5 podiums in 9 races in New Zealand Toyota Racing

As part of his preparation for his first full season of racing, Will competed in the Toyota Racing Series (TRS) in New Zealand in January 2009. The TRS is the most competitive single-seater class in New Zealand and the cars run the same Taatus chassis as the Formula Renault UK Championship as well as similar Michelin tyres, so is therefore an ideal preparation for his main 2009 objective. The TRS attracts the top local drivers as well as a number of overseas competitors, including this year drivers from Australia and the Far East.

Will competed in the three round International Series, comprising nine races over three consecutive weekends. The International Series makes up three rounds of a wider nine race series for the overall Championship.

The International Series ran at three different NZ tracks; Timaru Raceway, Terretonga Raceway and Taupo International Circuit, the latter as part of the NZ A1GP meeting.

Will achieved an incredible five podium finishes across the nine races, comprising four second places and a third. He also achieved one pole position despite the lack of local experience which many of the local drivers benefited from.

The winner of the International Series was Mitch Cunningham, a NZ driver with two years TRS experience and a year of Indy Lights experience in the US.

Will commented, “The TRS has been a great series for me to gain experience in. In the later races Mitch was the only driver consistently ahead of me and given his relative experience to mine, I’m delighted with my results”.
